1968 Tet Offensive

I arrived in Vietnam at the worst possible time--the afternoon of January 30, 1968--less than twelve hours before the beginning of the bloody Tet Offensive and the next thirty days would prove to be the most terrifying of my life.  The offensive was by far the most massive attack ever launched by the enemy and it caught our side completely by surprise.  U.S. commanders had no idea the North Vietnamese were capable of striking most provinces and major cities—over 100 in all—at once.  They blew up bridges, overran friendly military bases, captured the main South Vietnamese language radio station, briefly occupied the Commander of the U.S. forces’ headquarters at the Da Nang airstrip, and most embarrassing of all, overran the American Embassy.... more
