At long last, after 28 months, in June of 1970, the war was finally over for me.  Yet I was saddened beyond words as I made my final journey through these hills below Khe Sanh on the way to the "freedom bird" at the airport in Da Nang.  As I silently bid farewell to landmarks laden with memories --L. Z. Stud, the Rockpile, the “washout,” Camp Carroll--I was overcome with a depression that I hardly expected.  I felt so alone now and alienated from everything I was about to return to.... more
